As a leading eye surgery center near Los Angeles and Orange County, our facility continues to stay at the forefront of vitreous, macula, and retina research.
Dr. Sebag is committed to continuing his groundbreaking research with the goal of creating better treatments and diagnosis for medical conditions involving the vitreous, macula, and retina. We encourage you to bookmark our ‘Hope and the Future’ page to stay abreast on this exciting research.
The eye surgery staff at the VMR Institute remains dedicated to providing the residents of Los Angeles, Orange County, and surrounding areas with the highest quality care in an environment that is supportive and comfortable.

DRUG-ENHANCED VITREOUS SURGERY STUDY
The VMR institute has been selected to participate in clinical research trials using the newest form of drug therapy for diabetic retinopathy and vein occlusions. There is also a new study using novel drug therapy to enhance vitreous surgery. Contact Research@VMRinstitute.com for more information.
Current Research Projects:
IMAGING OF THE VITREOUS, MACULA, & RETINA
Using the newest technology for digital imaging, Dr. Sebag is supervising Priya Gupta, a 4th year medical student at USC, who is conducting research in collaboration with the USC School of Medicine and the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary. This powerful new imaging technology has been available at the VMR Institute since November of 2005 and has been used extensively in clinical care and research. The results have been presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Club Jules Gonin/Retina Society, and the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology (ARVO) in 2007.
3-DIMENSIONAL THRESHOLD AMSLER GRID TESTING
In collaboration with scientists at USC and Caltech/JPL, Dr. Sebag is developing advanced diagnostic instrumentation to detect central visual field abnormalities in patients with macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, macular pucker, central serous chorio-retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusions. Renu Jivrajka, a USC medical student, has been conducting studies at the VMR Institute, the results of which have been presented at the Western Retina Study Club and the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology (ARVO) in 2007.
VERTICAL FUSION AMPLITUDE MEASUREMENTS
Under the supervision of Dr. Sebag and Alfredo Sadun, MD, PhD (Professor of Ophthalmology & Neurosurgery at USC), Janet Kim (4th year medical student at USC) has been studying patients at the VMR Institute in Huntington Beach. Using a new technology to measure eye movements with greater precision than ever before, the group has found remarkable new information concerning the eye and the brain, which will be presented at the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology (ARVO) in 2007.
In collaboration with Dr. Rafat Ansari, on leave from NASA and presently a Professor at the University of Texas at Houston, Dr. Sebag has helped to develop new diagnostic instrumentation to assist in detecting diseases of the vitreous, macula, and retina early in their course. The earlier a disease is diagnosed, the more effective will be the treatment. Since the eye is the window to the body, this advanced new technology will not only enable non-invasive diagnostics of eye diseases, but also diseases of the brain and body.
The VMR Institute in Huntington Beach participates in a number of pioneering research endeavors to develop improved treatments for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinovascular disorders (such as retinal vein occlusions), and other conditions of the vitreous, macula, and retina (VMR). Thus, patients at the VMR Institute can avail themselves of the latest treatments for vision loss and blindness, often before other doctors can offer these therapies.
In addition, Dr. Sebag collaborates with researchers at USC, Harvard, Caltech, NASA, and the University of Texas at Houston, to name but a few, to improve the care of diseases of the vitreous, macula, and retina (VMR).
Dr. Sebag began conducting vitreous research as a medical student at the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Columbia University. Over the past 25 years this has been his passion and has resulted in an unparalleled expertise in this area. Considered one of the world’s pre-eminent experts in vitreous, Dr. Sebag has published widely in this area.
